B. What Is a Literary Approach?[1]

A literary approach starts from recognizing that authors use aesthetic devices to a greater or lesser extent, both to make their works interesting and to help the audience focus attention on the main communicative concerns.

A wide variety of literary approaches have been applied to the Bible, and these vary in their emphases on the author, the audience, and the text. I am here sticking with what we may call conservative literary approaches: namely, those which focus on the text having a meaning, as opposed to the modern kind, which are primarily interested in the process by which the text came about, and as opposed to the postmodern kind, which locate meaning only in the reader or in the reader’s interpretive community or which deny the possibility of communication altogether[2]

Perhaps I need to give some warrant for this preference. Writing in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Frederick Crews observed, “The totality of Western [literary] criticism in the 20th century defies summary except in terms of its restless multiplicity and factionalism.” But this means that there is no single literary method, and one must decide what to do. The basic choices in biblical studies revolve around what it means to explain a biblical work: do we aim to explain how the work came to be as it is, or do we aim to explain how that work should function as a religious text? While not rejecting the former out of hand, I am seeking the latter. I am grounding my sense of how a text should function in the communication model that I described above.

Conservative literary approaches to biblical narrative share some of the same concerns as discourse analysis and add some of their own. These methods stem from the observation that the biblical narratives are stories and hence involve characters, events (plot), and scenes. To call them stories is not to downplay whatever historical claims they might make (indeed, if the genre is one that tells history, then of course one must address these); instead it directs our attention to the narrator’s ways of portraying characters’ good and bad traits and of displaying or hiding his own point of view. A helpful survey of these approaches for the uninitiated is the Ph. D. dissertation of V. Philips Long, The Reign and Rejection of King Saul. Some of the features we find in the Old Testament narratives include the following:[3]

•    The narrator is reliable and omniscient: that is, he serves as the voice and perspective of God.

•    The narration is scenic: that is, the emphasis is on direct action and interaction of the characters rather than on descriptive detail of the environs.

•    The narratives are sparsely written: that is, they focus on what is essential for the narrative.

•    The author will use Leitwortstil: that is, he will repeat a key word or word root to draw attention to thematic issues.

•    The author employs wordplay, such as words or roots used with different meanings or words that sound alike; these are generally used for ironic contrasts.

•    The author signals heightened speech using poetic diction: that is, elevated diction of a speech is evidence of its significance; often oracular, it may even be divine speech.

•    The author uses repetition, such as of similar kinds of events, and even of scenes, in different circumstances.

•    The author employs analogy and contrast, where the characters and scenes are like and unlike one another.[4]

The result of these features is that, generally speaking, the author communicates his point of view by indirect and laconic means. The emphasis will be on showing (displaying the heart by action and speech) versus telling (the narrator telling us explicitly what kind of person the character is).

Hence, if we want to be good readers of Old Testament narratives, we will pay attention to, for example, the way people speak. We will look for the relation between what they say and what they do, or between what the narrator has reported and what the character reports (if the character adds or deletes things, how does this reflect spin?), or between what someone says (or is told) he will say and what he does say. The biblical narrators are fully aware that humans are sinful and that even the best of us have mixed motives and imperfect morality. Very few important biblical characters get off with a purely positive portrayal, since the authors rarely intend to make heroes out of their characters[5]

If we bring these disciplines together, we can arrive at a methodology that is based on empirical studies of linguistic and literary conventions, and this entitles us to a level of confidence in our reading. David Cotter, in his recent commentary on Genesis that employs literary methods, nevertheless falls into pessimism when he admits:

Are these structures really “in” the text we are studying? Has their author purposefully organized his material in this way so that we can discover it many years later? I think not. These structures are generally speaking more in the exegete than in the text. In other words, whenever we study a text we necessarily organize our reactions in some manner. We note beginning and end, we find a middle point of high emotional drama and so on.

If this is so, then we have no ground for saying that one reading is better than another, and this runs counter to our experience as authors and readers.[6]
