E. Allusions, Echoes, and Reverberations

In connection with the last expositional question, we should comment on criteria for recognizing how the passage we are studying uses earlier texts and how later texts use our text. This is an important part of exegesis, for at least two reasons. First, in view of the communication model I have advocated, we must note how competent readers have taken our text, as well as what aspects of their shared experience of the world the author operates on. Second, the biblical material is self-consciously in development, with its parts in organic relationship to one another: Moses foretells a line of prophets (Deut. 18:15–22) but also requires that their message be in harmony with his (Deut. 13:1–5).

One scholar who has tried to posit criteria for detecting these uses is Richard Hays, in his study entitled Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul. He distinguishes an “echo” from an “allusion,” but the distinction is primarily in how obvious the “intertextual reference” is. He offers seven tests for weighing claims about such references:

(1)  Availability. Was the proposed source of the echo available to the author and/or original readers?

(2)  Volume. The volume of an echo is determined primarily by the degree of explicit repetition of words or syntactical patterns; how loudly does it evoke the alleged precursor?

(3)  Recurrence. How often does Paul elsewhere cite or allude to the same scriptural passage?

(4)  Thematic coherence. How well does the alleged echo fit into the line of argument Paul is developing?

(5)  Historical plausibility. Could Paul have intended the alleged meaning effect? Could his readers have understood it?

(6)  History of interpretation. Have other readers, both critical and precritical, heard the same echoes?

(7)  Satisfaction. With or without clear confirmation from the other criteria listed here, does the proposed reading make sense?[1]

This list does not give as much weight as I would to explicit verbal echoes as the first criterion, nor does it indicate where the burden of proof lies when such explicit echoes are missing. However, it does serve as a place to begin, and we can benefit from the criteria.

A good example that shows how important it is to have criteria comes in Calum Carmichael’s book The Story of Creation, which argues that the seven creation days of Genesis underlie the first five chapters of John. This book raises all manner of questions, especially about what constitutes a reference or evocation—but Carmichael never addresses that and hence never provides criteria by which we may evaluate his proposals.

Carmichael’s book shows why we should give priority to the criterion of volume; namely, to look for vocabulary and syntax (the Masoretic Text for Old Testament echoes, and Greek versions for New Testament evocations of the Old Testament). Of course there will be times when we must appeal to the evocation of ideas, and we do best when we give reasons for our parallels.

These chapters from Genesis are a special case: to speak of what biblical materials they use is to make a judgment about the date of the materials. And further, the impression we get is that the influence is from Genesis to other texts. So in this study I will examine ways in which the material from Genesis has been taken up into other texts. Rather than distinguish between citations, allusions, and echoes, I will simply refer to reverberations.

The texts in which I will look for echoes are the rest of the Old Testament, intertestamental Jewish literature (especially the Apocrypha, Philo, and Josephus), and the New Testament. This reflects my interest in the Christian appropriation of the Old Testament as Scripture, of course.[2]

Students of the New Testament have considered this matter, but from the other end of the stick: namely, starting with the New Testament itself. Indeed, students of the Old Testament seem to have left it to the New Testament students; Wernberg-Möller put it this way:

So the use of the Old Testament in the New is the concern of the New Testament scholar, and not of the Old Testament scholar; the latter should not go to the New Testament, except in isolated instances for the purpose of textual criticism, and should never for a moment forget that, as far as he is concerned, it is the original meaning of the text that matters, and not the use which was made of it in the New Testament.

This author is clear that “a theological task along the lines of Christian systematic theology can be accomplished in the case of the Old Testament taken as a whole only by imposing upon the latter interpretations different from the plain meaning of the text—interpretations which are either typological or allegorical.”

There are several reasons why we should reject Wernberg-Möller’s strictures. First, it fails to acknowledge the role of considering what other readers have seen: that is, what I think to be the plain meaning of the text may be plain to me, but I may be wrong if a competent reader sees otherwise. Second, it presupposes that later authors are unreliable—and thus reflects the Enlightenment uncritically. Third, it assumes what it ought to prove: both that the Old Testament is inconsistent in itself and that the only New Testament uses are typological and allegorical (and why are these necessarily contrary to the original intent?).

Even though this attitude cannot stand careful examination, it is nevertheless firmly engrained. I will venture into this territory, allowing that it is just possible that reading the New Testament in the light of the Old Testament may shed interpretive light on the New Testament as well as on the Old Testament.[3]
