제목C. John Collins, Genesis 1-4 Commentary - D. 해석적 질문 22025-11-18 07:05

4.   How do those events follow causally from what comes before and affect causally what comes after?

This concerns the relationship between our pericope and its context. The events in our passage may be influenced by choices the characters made in earlier passages, while the choices the characters make in our pericope may influence events later. This reflects the biblical position that, under divine sovereignty, our choices are freighted with unimaginable significance and effect.

In the case of 1 Samuel 3, verse 1a (“the young man Samuel”) links up with 1 Samuel 2:11, 18, 26, each of which uses the same term (“young man, lad”) for Samuel, and each of which is off the main event line. Samuel, the foster son of Eli, is contrasted with Hophni and Phineas, the natural sons of Eli—but just as they did not “know the Lord” (2:12), neither did he—yet (3:7); this is probably a reproach on Eli. The decree against Eli’s house (3:11–14) picks up the message from the man of God (2:27–36). This decree is worked out in what follows, as the sons of Eli die at the hands of the Philistines, as Eli falls over and dies, and as the ark goes into exile. Similarly, in 1 Samuel 7:3 and elsewhere, we can see how Samuel rises to prominence.

The episode in Matthew 4:1–11 directly follows Matthew 3, where John was in the “wilderness” (3:1, 3)—and Jesus was led into the wilderness (4:1). In Matthew 3:13–17, at Jesus’ baptism, we find the Spirit descending on him (3:16)—the same Spirit who led Jesus into the wilderness (4:1). Finally, the voice from heaven declared Jesus “my beloved Son” (3:17), and this is what the devil tests (4:3, 6).

Thematically, we see Jesus as the one who resisted temptation and who is therefore qualified for his ministry (as the ideal Israel). We also see the contest over how he will inherit his universal kingship over the Gentiles (a messianic mission): in Matthew 28:18 we see that he has gone about it the right way, in contrast to the offer in Matthew 4:9.[1]

5.   Are there repeated key words or roots (both within this pericope and across several pericopes)?

Repeating key words can bind passages with a theological unity, as well as give them a unity across pericope boundaries. Further, repetition of roots within a pericope can provide anaphora (back reference to something mentioned previously) or can be used for irony.

For example, 1 Samuel 2:30 is a controlling principle for the first part of 1 Samuel: “Those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.” Here, the word honor is from the Hebrew root כבד (k-b-d), from which other forms are derived meaning “heavy,” “harden [the heart],” and “glory.” The word lightly esteemed is from the root קלל (q-l-l), the natural antonym of כבד. Use of words from these roots serves to remind the reader that 1Samuel 2:30 is the relevant interpretive principle. This appears in 1 Samuel 3:13, where Eli’s sons were “blaspheming [מקללים, meqalelîm] God.”

Within the pericope, the key repetition is דבר (dabar, “word, thing”), found in 1 Samuel 3:1, 7, 11, 17, 18, 19, 21; 4:1a. The related verb דבר (dibber, “to speak”) appears in 1 Samuel 3:9, 10, 12, 17; and other terms in the same semantic realm are “word of the Lord was revealed” (3:7), “tell the vision” (3:15), and “the Lord revealed himself” (3:21). All of these together remind us of the work of the prophet, to which Samuel is now called.

This shows us that the call of Samuel restores divine revelation. Samuel’s work is a paradigm for all true prophets, who must insist on covenant faithfulness and must not hide a single word of God’s revelation (1 Sam. 3:17).

Matthew 4:10 has Jesus saying, ὕπαγε, σατανᾶ (“Be gone, Satan!”). Compare this with the similar words in Matthew 16:23, ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου, σατανᾶ (“Get behind me, Satan!”)—but this time addressed to Peter, who would dissuade Jesus from his path to the cross. These are the major temptations to enter his kingship by pragmatic means.

Within the Matthew 4 pericope, we find προσέρχομαι (“came,” vv. 3, 11): this is a contrast, because in one case the tempter came, and in the other angels came. We also find γέγραπται (“it is written”) in verses 4, 7, 10, where Jesus cites from Deuteronomy; contrast this with verse 6, where the devil uses it to introduce a quotation from Psalm 91 (which he distorts). Other repetitions include πειράζω (“tempt,” vv. 1, 3) and διάβολος (“devil,” vv. 5, 8, 11) as the one who tempts.[2]

6.   How does the author present the characters?

For example, look for the ways in which the characters’ action and speech reveal their hearts; the way they describe events as compared with the way the narrator does (their spinning of events); the ways people develop or deteriorate; and the ways an author may create sympathy or suspicion.

The author of 1 Samuel is clear on why it took so long for Samuel to respond to God’s call: “Samuel did not yet know the Lord.” Something this explicit should control our reading of the rest. This is similar to 1 Samuel 2:12, where Hophni and Phineas did not know the Lord, but it is also different—because the “not yet” in 1 Samuel 3:7 leads us to expect a change. Samuel’s reluctance to tell the vision (3:15) is understandable given its content and his youth, but his obedience to Eli’s solemn charge (3:18) shows what kind of prophet he will be and justifies Israel’s confidence in him.

Eli comes across as a kindly figure, of genuine piety: he is gentle with Samuel when the boy comes to his bedside three times (most parents can appreciate how much kindness this would take); he recognizes the Lord’s call; and he enjoins Samuel to deliver the message in full. All of this makes his parental failure stand out even more—his piety cannot make up for failure to initiate his children into knowing the Lord (something at the heart of covenant faithfulness—see Gen. 18:19—and Eli’s task is to be an example of such faithfulness). Sadly, this character defect shows up in Samuel as well (1 Sam. 8:3).

The Lord is patient, too, in his willingness to call Samuel four times. He never chides Samuel. Nor is he limited by Eli’s failure to lead Samuel into a proper relationship with God. Theologically, we can see his freedom, as well: he calls Samuel but not Hophni and Phineas. But his freedom is never caprice: Hophni and Phineas have debased themselves and cannot blame God.

In Matthew 4 we see that Jesus is presented as the one who resists temptation by citing the hortatory section of Deuteronomy (Matt. 4:4 from Deut. 8:3; Matt. 4:7 from Deut. 6:16; Matt. 4:10 a paraphrase of Deut. 6:13). By fasting forty days and forty nights he is like Moses (Matt. 4:2; compare Exod. 34:28; Deut. 9:9, 18, 25; 10:10). We see his humanity in Matthew 4:11: after the contest he is weary and receives ministration. He proves his true sonship by resisting temptation.

We see Satan as a real and malevolent person: a clever tempter who addresses a felt need (Matt. 4:3), distorts Scripture (v. 6), and offers a shortcut (vv. 8–9). He is overcome by faithfulness to Scripture.[3]

7.   What devices does the author use to communicate his point of view?

For example, sometimes he gives an explicit evaluation of characters or events (this is rare); sometimes he allows us to see contrasts between characters (for example, between the chaste Joseph and the lustful Judah, Gen. 38–39); sometimes he uses ironic foreshadowing or back reference; sometimes he omits the mention of things we would have expected.

In 1 Samuel 3, the author favors us with an explicit evaluation: “Samuel did not yet know the Lord” (3:7). He also reports God’s speech a great deal, and, for a biblical author, this indicates the view that the audience should adopt. We see further that the Lord “let none of [Samuel’s] words fall to the ground” (3:19) and that “the Lord revealed himself to Samuel” (3:21)—hence the “word of Samuel” that “came to all Israel” (4:1a) is in fact God’s word, and reliable.

In Matthew 4:1–11, the author is explicit with πειράζω and the names of the parties. We already know what Matthew thinks of Jesus (3:17), so we resent anyone calling that into question or urging him to use his sonship for selfish purposes. We should also recognize the misuse of the psalm text.[4]

8.   What is the passage about?

Once we have answered these questions, we are in a position to summarize what the pericope is about: that is, what is the key event, what is its significance, and how does the author want his audience to think about it? The focus here is on the author’s intent as embodied in the text itself—in its genre conventions, discourse features, rhetorical devices, and point of view.

The study of 1 Samuel 3 enables us to see that the author is presenting the call of Samuel to be a true prophet of God; he is to be a true prophet, never hiding any of God’s word. Samuel’s reliability matters because he is the one who will anoint the first two kings of Israel: Saul, who proves a failure, and David, who, with all his faults, is nevertheless the headwaters of an everlasting dynasty (2 Sam. 7). And just as the true prophet makes known God’s words, the right response for faithful Israel is to heed that word with repentance, faith, and obedience.

If we study Matthew 4:1–11 in this way, we can see that the passage aims to present Jesus as the messianic king promised in the Old Testament: he is qualified to call the Gentiles to submit to his empire (Matt. 28:18–20). He is also the ideal Israel, and hence the ideal Israelite (see the use of Deut. texts)—which makes him the ideal Man (which would contrast him to Adam).

We also see Satan as the tempter, the enemy of God’s purpose and people; nevertheless Jesus meets and defeats him, and this he does as the champion and representative of God’s people.[5]

9.   How are covenantal principles on display here?

For example, how does this passage demonstrate God’s grace; or how do we see the tension between the conditionality and unconditionality of covenant participation; or how do we see divine sovereignty at work; or the success or failure of covenant succession (i.e., the promise in Gen. 17:7; 18:19); or the function of the mediatorial kingship (e.g., David’s combat with Goliath)? Under this heading we should also consider the ways in which later Scripture refers to the passage we are studying. For example, the historical psalms (such as Pss. 78; 105; 106) lead us in our theological reflection on the history of Israel, and Paul’s reference to Abraham (Rom. 4:3–5) should lead us to find a religious kinship between Christians and their forefather in the faith.

Answers to these questions can provide the jumping-off point for theologically sensitive application to ourselves, whether in discerning the covenantal principles by which God deals with his people or in the examples of individuals who act faithfully or unfaithfully toward God’s gracious covenant and what happens as a result.

In the case of 1 Samuel 3, we might explore how Eli’s chief flaw is his failure as a father, and we might consider how diligent parenting is a crucial aspect of honoring the Lord (2:30). We might also reflect on how this is to be especially true of the priesthood of the covenant people, who are to embody covenant faithfulness for the sake of the whole people. We might also pursue the notion of a true prophet and see how important it is to discern one and listen to his words (as in the case of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, whose words are so unwelcome).

In the case of Matthew 4:1–11, themes include the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah’s rule over the Gentiles and the New Testament texts that take this up (as Rev. 11:15; Rom. 15:8–12). Christians are able to see their obedience to the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19–20 as the means by which Jesus conquers the Gentiles and incorporates them into his worldwide empire.

There is also the theme of Jesus’ victory over Satan on behalf of his people. It is the “prince of the power of the air” who keeps mankind—Jews and Gentiles—in thrall and prevents them from giving themselves to Christ. As Genesis 3:15 foretells (see discussion in chapter 6 below), Jesus wins a victory over the tempter for his people—and therefore Christians lay hold of his strength and triumph (in the New Testament, see 1 John 3:8; Heb. 2:14–15; Col. 2:15). This is why the key to spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6:10–20 is to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might,” which comes from “putting on” the armor of God—and, since the way Paul describes the armor of God comes from Old Testament messianic prophecy, this is another way of saying “putting on Christ/the new man” (as in Eph. 4:24; Rom. 13:12, 14; Gal. 3:27; Col. 3:10, 12; 1 Thess. 5:8).[6]
