4.   The meaning of “kind”

The word מין (mîn, “kind”) appears in days 3, 5, and 6, each time in the construction למין + suffix (“according to the kind of it/them”):

And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Gen. 1:11–12)

So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Gen. 1:21)

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Gen. 1:24–25)

Some suggest that the word kind is roughly equivalent to “species” and that the text is opposed to any notion of new species developing from old ones.

There are two problems with such statements. First, the meaning of מין does not support it; and second, it is not what Genesis actually says. As to the semantics of מין, the term here is not as technical as “species”; it rather means something like “category” or “variety,” and its basis for classification is the appearance.

Second, consider what the text actually says. It simply says that these first plants bore their fruit according to their kinds and that the first animals were created according to their kinds. This does not say that these are the only “kinds” that ever were or could be.

Let us relate this to the genre and message of the text. It takes for granted the everyday experience of its audience, namely, that wheat grains produce more wheat, barley makes more barley, and so on. (The text does not say that camels produce more camels; it leaves the reader to draw the inference.) The reader will get the idea that the things he is familiar with work the way they do because God intended them to work that way: there are edible plants and domesticable animals—every farmer knows this, and Genesis explains why it is so. This, as we shall see in chapter 10, provides the philosophical ground for a confident, and even scientific, approach toward the world, even though it is not what we call a philosophical or scientific statement in itself. It does not assert, however, that under some circumstances one cannot get varieties of wheat so different that they are different species; it does not comment on the topic at all.[1]
