D. The Expositional Questions

We can combine the insights of these approaches into a method for theological exposition of Old Testament narrative; we can apply the same method to studying New Testament narrative. The method, such as it is, consists of a set of questions for the text. I will illustrate the method using 1 Samuel 3 (the call of Samuel) and Matthew 4:1–11 (the temptation of Jesus). One disadvantage to calling this approach a “method” is that someone might suppose that I am suggesting that we can isolate these questions from one another and simply answer them in sequence. It will be clear from these examples, and from the expositions that follow, that no one could possibly do that; rather, these questions advance us along the hermeneutical spiral.[1]

1.   What is the pericope, and who are the participants?

We want to identify the boundaries of our pericope; for example, by noticing places where the location changes, or where a new set of participants is introduced, or where there is some grammatical expression of discontinuity, or where some problem is introduced at the beginning and then resolved at the end. We also list the cast of characters and note when they enter and when they leave.

Consider, for example, 1 Samuel 3. Verse 1 begins with waw + subject (“Now the young man Samuel”), shifting the focus from the previous material, where a man of God had pronounced judgment on Eli and his house; also, none of the verbs (or quasi-verbs if we include אין, ’ên, “there was no”) in this verse are in the wayyiqtol, which means that its three clauses are background to the new section. The pericope ends not with the chapter break but with 1 Samuel 4:1a, “and the word of Samuel came to all Israel.” This is an example of “problem-resolution”: the pericope opens with a “problem” (3:1, “the word of the Lord was rare”) and tells the story of how the situation was alleviated (4:1a, the word of the Lord coming by way of Samuel). This envelope sets off the pericope.

The main participants in 1 Samuel 3:1–4:1a are Samuel, Eli, and the Lord, all of whom are active throughout; “all Israel” carries out a storyline action in 1 Samuel 3:20 (they knew that Samuel was established as a prophet). This cast of characters, with the prominent place it gives to Samuel, also sets the pericope off from the ones before and after it: 1 Samuel 2 mentions Samuel only sporadically, and 1 Samuel 4:1b–7:2 does not mention him at all.

In Matthew 4, it is easy to see that the pericope is verses 1–11. Matthew 4:1 makes a transition from the place where John was baptizing; Matthew 4:11 wraps up the action with a verb in the imperfect describing the outcome of the pericope. Matthew 4:12 changes the location from the wilderness of Judah to Galilee. The main participants are only two: Jesus and “the tempter.” Actors mentioned briefly are the Spirit (4:1) and angels (4:11).[2]

2.   What is the paragraph structure of the pericope (including peak)?

Here we outline the broad structure of the events described in our passage. A paragraph would consist, for example, of a single exchange between two characters or a connected set of actions. The “peak” is that part of the narrative that has the maximum interest: for example, when God finally makes his opinion known or when the narrative tension is at its climax; it is often the communicative focus of the pericope.

Consider again 1 Samuel 3. As we observed, 1 Samuel 3:1 is background and sets out the problem to be resolved by the events in this pericope. Then verses 2–3 crystallize this background into one particular evening, when Eli and Samuel were lying in bed: only the very first verb, ויהי (wayehî, “and it came about”), is wayyiqtol, which means that the author is still setting the stage. The next three paragraphs describe the way that the Lord tries three times to call Samuel without success. In the next paragraph the Lord at last gets to give his message to Samuel, and then Samuel reports the message to Eli. Finally, the author wraps it all up by speeding up elapsed time (“and Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him”) and indicating that the problem is now resolved.[3]

We may chart it this way:

3:1

problem

3:2–3

specific setting

3:4–5

first call

3:6–7

second call

3:8–9

third call

3:10–14

fourth call

3:15–18

Samuel tells Eli

3:19–4:1a

resolution

The peak comes in 1 Samuel 3:10–14, where God reveals his plan to punish Eli and his house. We can see this from the way the “call” progresses in intensity: “then the Lord called Samuel” (v. 4); “and the Lord called again, ‘Samuel!’ ” (v. 6); “and the Lord called Samuel again the third time” (v. 8); “and the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!’ ” (v. 10). Further, in this section the Lord gives his opinion—an opinion that not only matters more than any other, but also explains why the rest of 1 Samuel works out the way it does (the rationale for rejecting Eli also applies to rejecting Saul).

We can map the structure of Matthew 4:1–11 in this way:

Description

Participants

4:1–2

setting

Jesus the only subject of the event line

4:3–4

interchange1

tempter, then Jesus (ὁ δέ)

4:5–7

interchange2

devil, then Jesus

4:8–10

interchange3

devil, then Jesus

4:11

resolution

devil, then angels

The peak is Matthew 4:8–10, with verse 10 the highest part, which we see from Jesus saying, “Be gone, Satan”; the paraphrase of Deuteronomy in verse 10 (while verses 4, 7 were direct quotations); the dismissal results in the devil leaving in defeat (4:11).[4]

3.   What is the basic sequence of events?

In a Biblical Hebrew narrative, the function of the wayyiqtol verb form (also improperly called “the waw-consecutive with imperfect”) is as “the backbone or storyline tense of Biblical Hebrew narrative discourse.” Hence, if we want to find the main sequence of events in a narrator’s presentation, we should begin by looking for the wayyiqtol verbs. Other verb forms, when part of the narrator’s presentation (as opposed to the reported speech of participants), are used for supplying background information: for example, the “perfect” (qatal) is used to denote events off the storyline, while the “imperfect” (yiqtol), “converted perfect” (weqatal), and participle (qotel) denote activities with process aspect (“something was happening”).

Normally, in New Testament Greek narrative the aorist (both indicative and adverbial participle) gives the event line. In Matthew and John we have the historic present as well.36 Although the historic present is often said to be for the sake of greater “vividness,” this explanation is unlikely, since the feature appears so often. Off the storyline, imperfects are often used to provide background, as the present participle can be; subordinate clauses (such as relative clauses), which are grammatically marked as off the storyline, can use any of the tenses; but the time reference is typically with respect to the storyline. One special use of the imperfect is when it is near the end of the pericope and on the storyline: this typically denotes the outcome of the events.[5]

We may include here questions of the order of events, which may or may not be the same as order of narration, and historical truth claims our narrator is making. I consider it important to raise this question and invalid to bracket it out; after all, such claims, when made, are part of the communicative intent of the narrative.40

The comments above show how the verb tenses in 1 Samuel 3 function in structuring the account. In verse 1 we have a general condition that crystallizes into a particular day that is the setting for the events of this pericope (vv. 2–3). Then the events follow in their proper sequence, with the four calls from the Lord to Samuel in the night and the one call from Eli to Samuel the next morning (vv. 4–18). But then the closing paragraph moves ahead quickly, summarizing how Samuel grew up and became known as a prophet.

And what of the next pericope, starting in 1 Samuel 4:1b: does it follow sequentially from 4:1a? The answer is, probably not: Samuel is absent in a way that 1 Samuel 3:19–4:1a would not have led us to expect. We may explain this on source-critical grounds, but that is not explanation enough in light of the wordplay on כבד (kabed, “heavy”) that begins in 1 Samuel 2:30 and runs through these chapters, which indicates that someone has integrated the texts together. Hence we can see 1 Samuel 4:1b–7:2 as being concurrent with 1 Samuel 3:19–4:1a, and it is there to show the audience what happens when God’s people do not honor God’s covenant from their hearts—and thus to show why they need the ministry of Samuel and eventually the leadership of a king like David. It took the discipline of losing the ark to make Israel willing to hear Samuel’s message.

If we see the text this way, we then are relieved of all pressure to doubt the historical veracity of the account—unless we doubt supernatural events altogether, but that is another matter.[6]

In Matthew 4:1–11, we can discern the storyline with the aorist indicatives and participles. We also have storyline historic presents in verses 5 (“took”), 6 (“said”), 8 (“took … showed”), 8 (“said”), and 11 (“left”). We also have an imperfect, διηκόνουν (“they were ministering,” v. 11), as the last verb of the pericope, giving the outcome: “and so they proceeded to minister to him.”

This presents a difficulty in that Luke’s account arranges the temptations differently: namely, it has the order 1, 3, 2. Do the two accounts disagree? Only if the genre conventions imply a strict sequence in the storyline verbs. It is clear that Matthew and Luke use their verb tenses differently and present different perspectives on the event; it is quite conceivable therefore that they have differing assertions about sequence. If the actual sequence is not a strong part of the historical truth claims of the narrators, the chief problem for historicity remains the supernatural element.[7]
